Collect
Almighty God, you have built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone: Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Lesson: Isaiah 2:10-17
Go into the rocks,
hide in the ground
from dread of the LORD
and the splendor of his majesty!
The eyes of the arrogant man will be humbled
and the pride of men brought low;
the LORD alone will be exalted in that day.

The LORD Almighty has a day in store
for all the proud and lofty,
for all that is exalted
(and they will be humbled),
for all the cedars of Lebanon, tall and lofty,
and all the oaks of Bashan,
for all the towering mountains
and all the high hills,
for every lofty tower
and every fortified wall,
for every trading ship
and every stately vessel.
The arrogance of man will be brought low
and the pride of men humbled;
the LORD alone will be exalted in that day,

Second Lesson: Romans 6:3-11
Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin-- because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.

Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.

In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Psalm: 89:1-18

  1. Your love, O LORD, for ever will I sing; *
from age to age my mouth will proclaim your faithfulness.
  2. For I am persuaded that your love is established for ever; *
you have set your faithfulness firmly in the heavens.
  3. "I have made a covenant with my chosen one; *
I have sworn an oath to David my servant:
  4. 'I will establish your line for ever, *
and preserve your throne for all generations.'"
  5. The heavens bear witness to your wonders, O LORD, *
    and to your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones;
  6. For who in the skies can be compared to the LORD? *
who is like the LORD among the gods?
  7. God is much to be feared in the council of the holy ones, *
great and terrible to all those round about him.
  8. Who is like you, LORD God of hosts? *
O mighty LORD, your faithfulness is all around you.
  9. You rule the raging of the sea *
and still the surging of its waves.
  10. You have crushed Rahab of the deep with a deadly wound; *
you have scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.
  11. Yours are the heavens; the earth also is yours; *
you laid the foundations of the world and all that is in it.
  12. You have made the north and the south; *
Tabor and Hermon rejoice in your Name.
  13. You have a mighty arm; *
strong is your hand and high is your right hand.
  14. Righteousness and justice are the foundations of your throne; *
love and truth go before your face.
  15. Happy are the people who know the festal shout! *
they walk, O LORD, in the light of your presence.
  16. They rejoice daily in your Name; *
they are jubilant in your righteousness.
  17. For you are the glory of their strength, *
and by your favor our might is exalted.
  18. Truly, the LORD is our ruler; *
the Holy One of Israel is our King.

Gospel: Matthew 10:34-42
"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn 'a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law--
a man's enemies will be the members of his own household.'

Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives the one who sent me. Anyone who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and anyone who receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man's reward. And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward."
