Second Sunday of Advent

Collect
Merciful God, who sent thy messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

First Lesson: Isaiah 11:1-10
A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;
from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him--
the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of power,
the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD--
and he will delight in the fear of the LORD.

He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes,
or decide by what he hears with his ears;
but with righteousness he will judge the needy,
with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth.
He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth;
with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.
Righteousness will be his belt
and faithfulness the sash around his waist.

The wolf will live with the lamb,
the leopard will lie down with the goat,
the calf and the lion and the yearling together;
and a little child will lead them.
The cow will feed with the bear,
their young will lie down together,
and the lion will eat straw like the ox.
The infant will play near the hole of the cobra,
and the young child put his hand into the viper's nest.

They will neither harm nor destroy
on all my holy mountain,
for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD
as the waters cover the sea.

In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his place of rest will be glorious. 11In that day the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to reclaim the remnant that is left of his people from Assyria, from Lower Egypt, from Upper Egypt, from Cush, from Elam, from Babylonia, from Hamath and from the islands of the sea.

Second Lesson: Romans 15:4-13
For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the JewsB on behalf of God's truth, to confirm the promises made to the patriarchs 9so that the Gentiles may glorify God for his mercy, as it is written:
"Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles;
I will sing hymns to your name."
Again, it says,

"Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people."
And again,

"Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,
and sing praises to him, all you peoples."
And again, Isaiah says,

"The Root of Jesse will spring up,
one who will arise to rule over the nations;
the Gentiles will hope in him."

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Psalm: 72

  1. Give the King your justice, O God, *
    and your righteousness to the King's Son;
  2. That he may rule your people righteously *
    and the poor with justice;
  3. That the mountains may bring prosperity to the people, *
    and the little hills bring righteousness.
  4. He shall defend the needy among the people; *
    he shall rescue the poor and crush the oppressor.
  5. He shall live as long as the sun and moon endure, *
    from one generation to another.
  6. He shall come down like rain upon the mown field, *
    like showers that water the earth.
  7. In his time shall the righteous flourish; *
    there shall be abundance of peace till the moon shall be no more.
  8. He shall rule from sea to sea, *
    and from the River to the ends of the earth.
  9. His foes shall bow down before him, *
    and his enemies lick the dust.
  10. The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall pay tribute, *
    and the kings of Arabia and Saba offer gifts.
  11. All kings shall bow down before him, *
    and all the nations do him service.
  12. For he shall deliver the poor who cries out in distress, *
    and the oppressed who has no helper.
  13. He shall have pity on the lowly and poor; *
    he shall preserve the lives of the needy.
  14. He shall redeem their lives from oppression and violence, *
    and dear shall their blood be in his sight.
  15. Long may he live!
    and may there be given to him gold from Arabia; *
    may prayer be made for him always,
    and may they bless him all the day long.
  16. May there be abundance of grain on the earth,
    growing thick even on the hilltops; *
    may its fruit flourish like Lebanon,
    and its grain like grass upon the earth.
  17. May his Name remain for ever
    and be established as long as the sun endures; *
    may all the nations bless themselves in him and
    call him blessed.
  18. Blessed be the Lord GOD, the God of Israel, *
    who alone does wondrous deeds!
  19. And blessed be his glorious Name for ever! *
    and may all the earth be filled with his glory.
    Amen. Amen.

Gospel: Matthew 3:1-12
In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:

"A voice of one calling in the desert, Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.' "

John's clothes were made of camel's hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire."
