8. For The Departed

Collect:
O eternal Lord God, who holdest all souls in life: Give, we beseech thee, to thy whole Church in paradise and on earth thy light and thy peace; and grant that we, following the good examples of those who have served you here and are now at rest, may at the last enter with them into thine unending joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

or this

Almighty God, we remember this day before thee thy faithful servant N.; and we pray that, having opened to him the gates of larger life, thou wilt receive him more and more into thy joyful service, that, with all who have faithfully served thee in the past, he may share in the eternal victory of Jesus Christ our Lord; who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Lesson: Isaiah 25:6-9
On this mountain the LORD Almighty will prepare
a feast of rich food for all peoples,
a banquet of aged wine--
the best of meats and the finest of wines.
On this mountain he will destroy
the shroud that enfolds all peoples,
the sheet that covers all nations;
he will swallow up death forever.
The Sovereign LORD will wipe away the tears
from all faces;
he will remove the disgrace of his people
from all the earth.
The LORD has spoken.
In that day they will say,
"Surely this is our God;
we trusted in him, and he saved us.
This is the LORD, we trusted in him;
let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation."

Wisdom 3:1-9
But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them.In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be an affliction, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of men they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble. They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them for ever. Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his elect, and he watches over his holy ones.

Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 15:50-58
I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed-- in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory."

"Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?"

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Psalm: 116

  1. I love the LORD, because he has heard the voice of my supplication, *
    because he has inclined his ear to me whenever I called upon him.
  2. The cords of death entangled me;
    the grip of the grave took hold of me; *
    I came to grief and sorrow.
  3. Then I called upon the Name of the LORD: *
    "O LORD, I pray you, save my life."
  4. Gracious is the LORD and righteous; *
    our God is full of compassion.
  5. The LORD watches over the innocent; *
    I was brought very low, and he helped me.
  6. Turn again to your rest, O my soul, *
    for the LORD has treated you well.
  7. For you have rescued my life from death, *
    my eyes from tears, and my feet from stumbling.
  8. I will walk in the presence of the LORD *
    in the land of the living.
  9. I believed, even when I said,
    "I have been brought very low." *
    In my distress I said, "No one can be trusted."
  10. How shall I repay the LORD *
    for all the good things he has done for me?
  11. I will lift up the cup of salvation *
    and call upon the Name of the LORD.
  12. I will fulfill my vows to the LORD *
    in the presence of all his people.
  13. Precious in the sight of the LORD *
    is the death of his servants.
  14. O LORD, I am your servant; *
    I am your servant and the child of your handmaid;
    you have freed me from my bonds.
  15. I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving *
    and call upon the Name of the LORD.
  16. I will fulfill my vows to the LORD *
    in the presence of all his people,
  17. In the courts of the LORD'S house, *
    in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.
    Hallelujah!

103:13-22

  1. As a father cares for his children, *
          so does the LORD care for those who fear him.
  2. For he himself knows whereof we are made; *
          he remembers that we are but dust.
  3. Our days are like the grass; *
          we flourish like a flower of the field;
  4. When the wind goes over it, it is gone, *
          and its place shall know it no more.
  5. But the merciful goodness of the LORD endures for ever
          on those who fear him, *
          and his righteousness on children's children;
  6. On those who keep his covenant *
          and remember his commandments and do them.
  7. The LORD has set his throne in heaven, *
          and his kingship has dominion over all.
  8. Bless the LORD, you angels of his,
          you mighty ones who do his bidding, *
          and hearken to the voice of his word.
  9. Bless the LORD, all you his hosts, *
          you ministers of his who do his will.
  10. Bless the LORD, all you works of his,
          n all places of his dominion; *
          bless the LORD, O my soul.

  1. Out of the depths have I called to you, O LORD;
    LORD, hear my voice; *
    let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication.
  2. If you, LORD, were to note what is done amiss, *
    O Lord, who could stand?
  3. For there is forgiveness with you; *
    therefore you shall be feared.
  4. I wait for the LORD; my soul waits for him; *
    in his word is my hope.
  5. My soul waits for the LORD,
    more than watchmen for the morning, *
    more than watchmen for the morning.
  6. O Israel, wait for the LORD, *
    for with the LORD there is mercy;
  7. With him there is plenteous redemption, *
    and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins.

Gospel: John 5:24-27
"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.

John 6:37-40
All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day."

John 11:21-27
"Lord," Martha said to Jesus, "if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask."

Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."

Martha answered, "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day."

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"

"Yes, Lord," she told him, "I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world."
