Of a Saint II

Collect:
O Almighty God, who hast compassed us with so great a cloud of witnesses: Grant that we, encouraged by the good example of thy servant N., may persevere in running the race that is set before us, until at length,through thy mercy, we may with him attain to thine eternal joy; through Jesus Christ, the author and perfecter of our faith, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

O God, who hast brought us near to an innumerable company of angels and to the spirits of just men made perfect: Grant us during our earthly pilgrimage to abide in their fellowship, and in our heavenly country to become partakers of their joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Lesson: Wisdom 3:1-9
But the souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them.

They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead; and their passing away was thought an affliction and their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they are in peace.

For if before men, indeed, they may be punished, yet is their hope of immortality; chastised a little, they will be greatly blessed because God tried them and found them worthy of himself.

As gold in the furnace, he proved them, and as sacrificial offerings offerings, he took them to himself.

In the time of their visitation, they shall shine, and shall dart about as sparks through trouble.

They shall judge nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord shall be their King forever.

Those who trust in him shall understand truth, and the faithful shall abide with him in love: because grace and mercy are with his holy ones, and his care is with his elect.

Second Lesson: Philippians 4:4-9
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me--put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

Psalm: 34 or 34:15-22

  1. I will bless the LORD at all times; *
    his praise shall ever be in my mouth.
  2. I will glory in the LORD; *
    let the humble hear and rejoice.
  3. Proclaim with me the greatness of the LORD; *
    let us exalt his Name together.
  4. I sought the LORD, and he answered me *
    and delivered me out of all my terror.
  5. Look upon him and be radiant, *
    and let not your faces be ashamed.
  6. I called in my affliction and the LORD heard me *
    and saved me from all my troubles.
  7. The angel of the LORD encompasses those who fear him, *
    and he will deliver them.

    and desires long life to enjoy prosperity?
  13. Keep your tongue from evil-speaking *
    and your lips from lying words.
  14. Turn from evil and do good; *
    seek peace and pursue it.
  15. The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, *
    and his ears are open to their cry.
  16. The face of the LORD is against those who do evil, *
    to root out the remembrance of them from the earth.
  17. The righteous cry, and the LORD hears them *
    and delivers them from all their troubles.
  18. The LORD is near to the brokenhearted *
    and will save those whose spirits are crushed.
  19. Many are the troubles of the righteous, *
    but the LORD will deliver him out of them all.
  20. He will keep safe all his bones; *
    not one of them shall be broken.
  21. Evil shall slay the wicked, *
    and those who hate the righteous will be punished.
  22. The LORD ransoms the life of his servants, *
    and none will be punished who trust in him.

Gospel: Luke 6:17-23
He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coast of Tyre and Sidon, who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by evilA spirits were cured, and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all.

Looking at his disciples, he said:

"Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.
Blessed are you who hunger now,
for you will be satisfied.
Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.
Blessed are you when men hate you,
when they exclude you and insult you
and reject your name as evil,
because of the Son of Man. "

"Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their fathers treated the prophets.
